Title: Swine Flu
AvivaDove - October 22, 2009 10:12 PM (GMT)
Is it in your neighborhood yet? It's all over the schools here in suburban Philly. There's also a flu like virus, seasonal colds and an outbreak of head lice-eww!
The regular seasonal flu isn't here yet. We all had our regular flu shots. The swine flu shot is nowhere in sight around here. By the time it's available here, it will be too late.
I'm pretty sure my husband and I had swine flu in June. The dr said it wasn't, but he didn't do a test to prove it. We had a week of severe body aches, coughing, stomach pains, severe sweating with hot flashes and chills. The kids were ok. I was very careful. My husband coughed so much, he stopped drinking water and got a kidney stone.

I don't know about other areas, but I know that some schools in Northern California are offering the swine flu shot in early November.
Other supplies are being used to give shots or the nasel application to health care workers.

Not sure how bad it is around here, not too bad in our school system...yet anyway, but it is coming. As far as the vaccine goes you couldn't pay me enough to inject something into my kids that they just whipped up so quickly. I hate having to feel "dam*ed if I do, dam*ed if I don't" but it is just a very personal belief and feeling. No regular flu shots either because too many of my family member plus two close friends got really sick from that vaccine too;( ugh...

It hit the school I work at about a month ago. Some classes had almost 50% of students gone. I have to commend the parents for taking this seriously and keeping their child home when they weren't feeling well. Last week seemed to have most students back, but it hit some of the surrounding districts a couple of weeks ago. MEA (no school for the state) was the 15th and 16th which was a great time for a break. My niece's 5 year old son had a confirmed case, but luckily had a mild one. No one else in the family caught if, (3 year old brother and 9 month old sister). The baby was put on a preventative med since she has some lung problems. We were very fortunate, there has been a couple of deaths in neighboring counties, a 5 week old baby and 6 year old. Both had other health problems.

A 6 year old in a surrounding county of Virginia died recently, no other health issues. My 6 year old grand niece was confirmed with it, but she had a mild case as well. Knock on wood no one else in the family got it. She has an 11 year old sister.

My son has 10 kids in his first grade class. Four were absent today. My daughter has 8 kids in her special ed reading class. She was the only one there today. I went to the CVS to stock up on supplies. It's usually crowded. It was empty. The clerk said it was like that all day, the entire shopping center. I peeked in some stores. It was like a ghost town.
Next week, they're giving out the vaccine in Philadelphia public schools. Here in the suburbs, no word about when or where. I'm mad about that.
Also, I think alot of people are so worried about the new flu, they're forgetting to get their regular seasonal flu shots. That peaks in January or so. That one always kills people of all ages with health problems and the elderly. The two years I didn't get the shot, I got severe cases of the flu. I missed two weeks of college and was delerious.
I hope this outbreak doesn't affect the World Series players or fans. It already affected or should I say infected the cast of the Dancing with the Stars show.
Maybe it's a blessing in disguise that the Philadelphia public transportation union is about to go on strike. Public transportation will spread the germs around faster.

Well I'm a nursing student, and I'm in clinical rotation for Pediatrics and for Obstetrics. So we've been under extra pressure about not coming to school if we are sick. And we'll get into trouble if we try coming to clinicals with flu like symptoms. Especially since it's such an issue in pregnant women and very young kids.
I've had several friends contract it, and they were each given Tamiflu. One of my friends was out for two weeks, and the other one was out for a few days.

I heard a news story in the last couple of days that some hospitals in the SF Bay area, are not allowing young children to come into hospitals as visitors....that's how serious people are taking the various flu's that are out this year.

My 5 yr old cousin tested positive for it yesterday! He missed Trick or treat because of it :( Seeing that he's 5, trick or treat is a big deal for him! I'm going to get him a huge bag of candy though. He was so excited to go get candy that he wore his costume all night(my cousin sent pics) It broke my heart :( The only syntoms(sp?) he had was a bad cough, a fever, & a headache on Wednesday! His parents are keeping me updated!
