Title: The Oscars

cxiong - February 21, 2009 10:49 PM (GMT)
Well, its Oscar weekend! With the show airing tomorrow, its interesting to read and hear about everyone's predictions. I'm highly anticipating for the show, as well as the results.

If anyone else is watching, or follows the Oscars, I'd love to chat before, during, and after the show.

Here are my predictions for some of the nominations:

Best Picture: Slumdog Millionaire

Best Director: Danny Boyle, "Slumdog Millionaire"

Best Actor in a Leading Role: Mickey Rourke, "The Wrestler"

Best Actress in a Leading Role: Kate Winslet, "The Reader"

Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Heath Ledger, "The Dark Knight"

Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Penélope Cruz, "Vicky Cristina Barcelona"

Best Animated Film: "Wall-E"

Best Foreign Film: "The Class"

Best Documentary: "Man on Wire"

Best Adapted Screenplay: "Slumdog Millionaire"

Best Original Screenplay: "Milk"

Best Cinematography: "Slumdog Millionaire"

Best Costume Design: "The Duchess"

Best Makeup: "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"

Best Visual Effects: "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button"

I think "Slumdog Millionaire" will sweep the awards. It was a wonderful film, and much deserved. Personally, I'd like to see Richard Jenkins win for Best Actor. He was remarkable in "The Visitor." However, I know its a longshot, so I wont get my hopes up too much. Its a tough race between Mickey Rourke and Sean Penn, but I feel Mickey has got the upper hand. Kate Winslet is one of my all time favorites actresses, and seeing that she gave two Oscar-worthy performances this year, I feel this is her year, finally, after being nominated six times in the past. Although, Meryl Streep poses a great threat to her, which is not surprising because Meryl was astounding in "Doubt."

I agree on every single one except Winslet for "The Reader."

Slumdog should do very well.

SoulMusicRocks - February 22, 2009 04:01 AM (GMT)
As long as Sean Penn wins for Best Actor I will be a happy camper. And if not, "Milk" winning best picture would be all the more sweet (even though most of the country couldn't see it to begin with).

tulee - February 22, 2009 04:12 PM (GMT)
I think you're right about about those predictions, cxiong. I would like to see more honors for Milk especially for Director Gus Van Sant. He did a masterful job making you feel like you were part of the experience, and the casting was perfect.
Slumdog Millionaire will most likely win, and deservingly, it's a wonderful movie!

I didn't see The Wrestler, but I can't imagine a better performance than Sean Penn's in Milk.

Yeah, I know a lot of people are either disagreeing towards Winslet winning for "The Reader." They feel like she should've been nominated for "Revolutionary Road" instead. But for me, personally, I thought she did well in both films.

Oh, "The Wrestler" was an excellent movie. And Mickey Rourke, being called as "the comeback kid," gave an amazing performance. I do agree as well, though, that Sean Penn gave a marvelous performance in "Milk." In fact, the whole cast was great. It was a good movie overall, too. That's why I know its going to be a close call between those two.

durden - February 22, 2009 11:18 PM (GMT)
Honestly, I'd be surprised if Slumdog won less than 6.

nanab - February 22, 2009 11:26 PM (GMT)
Enjoy the show everybody..

lindagt - February 22, 2009 11:45 PM (GMT)
watching the red carpet show - Ryan seems a LOT more sober tonight than the night of the grammy show - LOL!

SoulMusicRocks - February 22, 2009 11:48 PM (GMT)
I miss Joan and Melissa Rivers doing the Red Carpet event. She was hilariously unscripted and extremely honest. :)

Leo DiCaprio was robbed by not being nominated for "Revolutionary Road".

My thoughts exactly!

I was so disappointed that the Oscars snubbed him of a nomination for his work in "Revolutionary Road." If anything, he should've certainly replaced Brad Pitt in the Actor's race.

nymphadora - February 23, 2009 03:28 AM (GMT)
I'm glad Heath Ledger won Best Supporting Actor.

MOMster - February 23, 2009 05:01 AM (GMT)
I was pretty happy that Sean Penn won best actor. He's an amazing actor. I haven't seen The Wrestler yet though, so don't know if Mickey Rourke deserved it or not.

cxiong - February 23, 2009 05:06 AM (GMT)
Well, a big congrats to all the winners. I'm happy that Kate Winslet won for Best Actress. I'm also happy for Sean Penn winning for Best Actor. Again, I knew it was going to be a tough race between him and Mickey. And although I had my vote on Mickey, Sean Penn deserved it just as much, as well as the other actors nominated... with the exception of Brad Pitt, sorry.

Great show, and I'm really looking forward to the upcoming films of '09.

Berkana - February 23, 2009 05:09 AM (GMT)
I was divided as I haven't gotten to see Milk yet. I did however see The Wrestler, and I absolutely loved Mickey Rourke in that. You just felt so bad for his character. It's kind of a deep seated visceral feeling for him.

tulee - February 23, 2009 05:28 AM (GMT)
At least Mickey Rourke won the Indie Spirit Award for Best Actor last night. I would have liked him to win the Oscar, but Sean Penn's performance was great as well and his win was an honor for the film. Glad that Winslet won too and loved her acceptance speech.

Yes, thanks for mentioning that as well. His acceptance speech was inspiring, as well as sending out a message about equal rights for all.

A pretty great night for the Oscars.

I hope they continue the format of five former winners introducing one of the nominees.

All of the nominees got their due, regardless of whether their name was called or not. Very classy.

Loved, loved, loved Hugh Jackman. The opening number was entertaining and funny.

Congrats to all the winners.

ohioguy45780 - February 23, 2009 11:49 AM (GMT)
I thought the show was pretty good. Critics are split on Jackman...but I think he pulled it off. Quite the song-and-dance man!

I didn't think they would let "Milk" go without something, after what happened in California in November. If "Slumdog" wasn't such a masterpiece, then "Milk" probably would have been the shoo-in for best picture. Penn's speech was desperately needed in a telecast that was fairly devoid of social commentary. It was a political win, perhaps to make a statement, but with a twist: Penn deserved it.

SoulMusicRocks - February 23, 2009 12:50 PM (GMT)
I'm still going through "oscar buzz" from last nights incredible show. It was amazing from start to finish, IMHO.

Dustin Lance Black's win for Best Original Screenplay was the highlight of the night for me. His acceptance speech was exceptional, inspiring, and a reminder for everyone to truly embrace full equality for all peoples. It made me cry because I connected with it so deeply. Everyone in the room at my place cried....Acceptance Speech

Hugh Jackman was absolutely hilarious. The opening number was creative and Anne Hathaway is a great singer. They should definitely tap her for a musical in the future with a voice like that! I also liked the musical medley he performed with Beyonce as well. It had a variety of great songs and seemed to melt well together.

I was surprised Benjamin Button didn't garner more awards, but I thought their choices for winners were pretty right on overall. It was just a great night of television with a lot of humor, entertainment, and moving moments too.

ETA: And how could I forget Sean Penn? He has a great sense of humor. I'm glad he won for Best Actor. Harvey Milk would be proud to know a movie about his life is helping to spur a new generation of equality proponents who are strong enough to fight for justice. Not merely quietly say "I support you", but actually getting out there to really make a difference and stand for our principles.

ElliottCat101 - February 23, 2009 05:37 PM (GMT)
Hugh Jackman was hilarious.

I was very glad Heath Ledger won... I still think Batman should have been nominated for more awards.

I guess I am glad Sean Penn won. He is phenomenal in every role.... It's just HIM I can't stand! haha I didn't even watch his expectance speech (but sounds like people liked it?) because he, personally, rubs me the wrong way and always has - so I muted it. When he's playing a character he's fine, but as soon as he is himself -- blah!

I thought is was sweet that Anne Hathaway got so teared up when she was being nominated.

And I might be in a minority here, but I think Slumdog got a few *too* many awards; It won categories I don't think it necessarily should have (sound editing? definitely should have gone to WallE).

SoulMusicRocks - February 23, 2009 07:29 PM (GMT)
I agree about Heath Ledger, EC. His family accepting the award for him was a powerful moment. You could see his peers in the audience were very impacted by it. Although, am I crazy, or was Heath not shown with the "In Memoriam" video Queen Latifah sang to?

I noticed that too. My family and I were all commenting that they would probably save him till last... nope, they just didn't show him!

I think maybe it's because they already kind of mentioned him and his passing when they were going through the best actor nominees...? I don't know what else it could be..

When I mentioned about Heath being missing in the tribute he said that he thought Heath died before last year's Academy Awards, so he was in last year's tribute. I just looked it up on Wikipedia, and his death was listed as January 22, 2008. That would have been before the Oscars, so I guess my husband was right. Imagine that. ;)

Ledger was the final person shown in last year's rememberance montage.

I hope they do the Oscars in a similar fashion next year.
