Description: deception expert exposes truths

The pilot of "Lie To Me" is on Fox tonight. Sounds like an interesting premise. Kelli Williams from "The Practice" is one of the stars.

"LIE TO ME, the compelling new drama from the producers of 24, stars Tim Roth ("The Incredible Hulk," "Reservoir Dogs") as DR. CAL LIGHTMAN, the world's leading deception expert who studies facial expressions and involuntary body language to discover not only if someone is lying, but why. When someone shrugs one shoulder, rotates a hand or raises the lower lip, Lightman knows he's lying.

Based on the real-life scientific discoveries of Paul Ekman, the series follows Lightman and his team of deception experts as they assist law enforcement and government agencies to expose the truth behind the lies."

I'll have to check this out. I took an entire course on Emotions last semester that dealt with facial expression and body language comprehension. Ironically, one of the books we read was from Paul Ekman. LOL

LOL. No, not emoticons. It was a class just purely on emotions. We talked about evolutionary, biological, social, and developmental theories and applications to human emotions.

And within the area of emotion is also nonverbal communication. The statistic is somewhat fuzzy to me, but I remember learning that we mostly communicate through nonverbal means. For example, you could tell someone your fine with words yet your eyes are slightly closed with sides of your mouth slightly downwards which indicates sadness. Thus, when words don't match the face or body language, this is when the potential for deception is present.

But, trust me, this is not an exact science. We tried to perfect our ability to detect emotions from body language and faces, but it is really complex. Human perception also always leaves room for human error in spite of the documented universality of basic emotions that Ekman talks about.

I've been intrigued about this show as well, but I didn't know Kelli Williams, who I really like, was in it. Thx MOMster!

what a doofus I am - LOL! I really thought it said "emoticons" and I just figured there was a class on emoticons! (although I don't really see you as being a "techy")

I'll be interested in hearing what you think of "Lie To Me" if you watch it - the class you took sounds so interesting!

I'll bet there is a class on emoticons too though. haha!

Kelli Williams was on the Ellen show this morning talking about it. Ellen was trying to "lie" to her to see if she could tell whether it was a lie or not. It was so funny because Ellen can't lie, and she just started laughing each time, so she couldn't pull it off.

We must have the same 'personalized tv schedule' momster! lol
I also watched Ellen & yeah, her attempts at lying were too funny. Poor Kelli still got fooled with the email one...that surprised me too, tho!

I watched the show tonight, thought it was pretty interesting. So far, I like it.

Question, is Kellie Williams related to Valarie Bertinelli? She kinda favors her and almost sounds just like her... i tried to look it up but didnt find much, maybe cuz theres nothing to find. Just thought id ask in case someone here knew.

I did watch this show - I'm not sure about it yet. It was watchable and has potential, but it didn't jump out and say "great show" - but I'll watch again. The main guy was a little too intense, but I liked Kelli's character.

Gr8 - I don't think she's related to Valerie Bertinelli, but I can see how you'd think there's a resemblance.

Saw the 1st 2 episodes of this new series and I'm loving it!!! I've always admired Tim Roth (since Pulp Fiction days). I think he's one cool dude and a great actor. Hope this series survives the ratings game.
