Title: Hbo Mini Series On John Adams
Description: I'm Enjoying It
Sk8888 - June 24, 2008 12:08 AM (GMT)
I don't get HBO, so I bought the John Adams Mini-Series that is out on DVD.
Paul Giamatti is so well cast as John Adams, as is Laura Linney as Abigail.
The reason I posted this in the Politics Forum is because it's really something to be reminded how our country got started, how scary it was for the "Congress" to break with England, and yes, the politicking that went into getting the full backing......well sort of....from all of the states' representatives.

Nancy, I didn't know your son was an actor. I wish you had posted that when the series was on. I would have looked for him.
Sk888, wow, the series is out on DVD already? It was a great series-- I wouldn't mind seeing it again. The acting is wonderful. My only complaint was that I had to raise the volume quite a bit (and my hearing is quite good) b/c Paul Giamatti spoke so softly.

cool! I'll see if I can buy or rent this!
Thanks sk8888 also, for the heads up about the series. I don't have HBO, either. And I also love both Paul Giamatti and Laura Linney.

LOL! He thinks I'm a "geek" if I talk about it! He has a big Farm Bureau commercial coming on soon! Filming starts the first of July. He is also the Cabbage Patch Kid in the Geico commercial. Just love him to pieces! Proud of him too!

I agree.
This is by far Giamatti's most challenging and complex acting role.
In character he makes asides under his breath, but you may need to adjust your volume to appreciate the dialog.
Nan, what episode was your son in?

This series was fantastic! I enjoyed every minute. found myself putting it on mute to read what was being said. Laura Linney as Abigail was just outstanding!! I hope all who are watching it enjoy it. It really gave me an insight to how our country was formed.
I want to see it again.

Momminy,
I heard that HBO is running the Mini-Series in its entirety on the 4th of July.
Check your local listings to be sure.
Btw: we watched the final episode last night. It was very moving.
Giamatti and Linney were at their shining best.
Tonight I'll be watching the DVD that shows all the behind the scenes work that went on to successfully recreate the costumes, buildings, etc. to be as historically accurate as possible.

I'm glad to hear your son's a working actor! I'm going to TiVo it. Can you explain you're son's role a little more so I can try and catch him?

I agree. It is great with a capital G!!! Sometimes I think we forget all the sacrifices that were made for our democracy and our freedoms. I try to never take it for granted.

Here's a snippet of the review on Amazon:
Amazon.com
Based on David McCullough's bestselling biography, the HBO miniseries John Adams is the furthest thing from a starry-eyed look at America's founding fathers and the brutal path to independence. Adams (Paul Giamatti), second president of the United States, is portrayed as a skilled orator and principled attorney whose preference for justice over anti-English passions earns enemies. But he also gains the esteem of the first national government of the United States, i.e., the Continental Congress, which seeks non-firebrands capable of making a reasoned if powerful case for America's break from England's monarchy.
The first thing one notices about John Adams' dramatizations of congress' proceedings, and the fervent pro-independence violence in the streets of Boston and elsewhere, is that America's roots don't look pretty or idealized here. Some horrendous things happen in the name of protest, driving Adams to push the cause of independence in a legitimate effort to get on with a revolutionary war under the command of George Washington. But the process isn't easy: not every one of the 13 colonies-turned-states is ready to incur the wrath of England, and behind-the-scenes negotiations prove as much a part of 18th century congressional sessions as they do today..... I'll never think of Ben Franklin the same way again!
